Your members draw the line on social media.
Monday, September 8, 2008
Matt Baehr, Bob Wolfe and Bruce Hammond have all written insightful posts about social media overload. I feel their pain. It's hard work keeping up with it all. But I'm sure all four of us would agree--don't let a little case of social media burn out keep you from testing the waters.
With so many free tools out there, the cost of failure is very small and the potential benefits are huge. Experimenting is a good thing. Don't think too hard about it. Try stuff. Lots of stuff. See what happens. Maybe nothing, maybe something. Either way, you're learning.
At the end of the day, let your members be the ones drawing the lines on social media. They'll vote with their participation. Your job is to give them something worthy of a YES vote.

I think it's important to remember that, while we're all immersed in this stuff day in and day out--hence the burnout--our members for the most part probably aren't. For a lot of them, many social media apps will be shiny and new and fun. They’ll also open up a new world of engagement that otherwise wouldn't have been possible.
In the meantime, though, someone needs to figure out a way to add an extra day to the week so there’s enough time to stay on top of all this stuff!
